VU Amsterdam

The Spatial Information Laboratory (SPINlab) is the centre for research and education in Geo-Information Science at VU University Amsterdam. The mission of the SPINLab is to develop an internationally recognised research and education portfolio in the areas of Geo-Information Science and Technology. The lab is part of the department of Spatial Economics and is chaired by Prof.dr. Henk J. Scholten. The SPINlab is part of the Department of Spatial Economics, a world renowned institute in the domains of Spatial, Transport and Environmental Economics. The SPINlab applies a wide range of innovative spatial analysis methods and techniques to societally relevant issues such as spatial planning; cultural heritage management; adaptation and mitigation to climate change; emergency and risk management; and location valuation. In our research we aim to transform spatial data into information that helps decision makers in preparing, developing and evaluating alternatives. The lab is active in research projects in relation to: participatory planning; environmental impact assessment; multi-criteria evaluation and optimization; and the development and application of geo-ict tools for spatial planning.
