Digital Engineering Enabling Collaborative Sustainable Urban Development In the past few years, there has been many initiatives from policy-makers and industry to expedite the adoption of digital engineering in civil infrastructure and connecting these with urban planning and management control systems (at the level of building, area and infrastructure). Since urban development and infrastructure projects are most of the time dependent on public funding and support, public sector plays, besides planner, architects and building industry, a significant role in the implementation of new technology in urban areas, with special focus on sustainable development and climate change mitigation. All building and urban system management components requires standardized devices and data standards. New players like home and building control sector and service providers are venturing into urban development arena (including infrastructure development), offering new concepts and planning tools, especially in enabling sustainable energy transition. The session shall discuss the progress of such initiatives and analyze the challenges and identify further roadmaps to be taken in ensuring sustainable urban development in Europe.

Delivering Smart Cities, Building and Infrastructure: Putting Smart Planning into Practice Geospatial analytics is modernizing and impacting planning decisions in cities. In order to deliver smart city services, smart buildings and smart infrastructure, geo-enabled design processes and planning technology can help in evaluating planning proposals against possible outcomes, engage diverse voices, and communicate effectively across departments and with the public. Practicing smart planning approach will make the planning system easier to understand, and more efficient, accessible, open and collaborative, through simpler rules and modern digital tools. The session will highlight new technologies that can simplify planning processes and services, and improve engagement; making cities more efficient, transparent, and investment-friendly.

Technology Trends Enabling New Age BIM Applications With the increased interest and adoption in AECOO industry, BIM is now attracting interest from other mainstream industries, stimulating new applications and potential of BIM data. One example is in the gaming industry, where augmented reality is used to enhance its user experience. Indoor positioning is another, providing competitive edge to shopping malls, hospitals and airports. Disruptive drone technology allows automatic production of engineering-ready 3D models that are now a new fundamental dataset in design and documentation processes. The panel shall discuss more new age applications that can be generated with the use of geo-referenced BIM data, supported by trending technologies such as IoT, artificial intelligence, etc, offering the industry a wealth of opportunities.
